Too Far for Miss Montana?

Miley Cyrus was not all too surprising when she showed up to Saturday's iHeartRadio music festival wearing nipple pasties, a mesh dress and furry sleeves!
Honestly, although it is not something I would personally wear, I feel like people are being over dramatic. We all are aware of her new style and her new persona. It's like how people that lived in Michigan their whole lives are still surprised when the temperature is 45 one day and 80 the next.  Get over it, buy both a sweater and a tank top, and man up. Miley is not on Disney Channel anymore, so what does it matter. Her music is STILL GOOD. You don't have to look at her if you don't want to.
I always find it funny when people will go out of their way to hate on a person just because they go about life differently than them. You know that one girl that bothers you on social media? UNFOLLOW HER! You don't need to follow her just so that you can talk about how much you hate her.
Therefore in terms of Miley, she has made it VERY clear that she does not care about any backlash she receives for her raunchy performances or outfits. This happens in pop music all the time. Madonna has done this, Britney Spears has done this.  In words of Marilyn Monroe, "Well behaved women rarely make history."

Amazing Emmy Moment

Last night on the Emmys, there were definitely some memorable moments! One of those moments being Merrit Wever's acceptance speech!

Merrit Wever gave one of the shortest acceptance speeches EVER. Usually at the Emmys, award producers have to start playing music just to get recipients off the stage due to time constraints. But, this was not the case for Merrit. In fact, all she said was " Thank you so much. Thank you so much. I gotta go, bye." Fortunately, her words were a hit with the Emmy audience. Merrit said backstage that she had to make a speedy exit because she realized she was about to cry. At first when I saw this I thought "Oh, she's just being funny!" But, as it turns out, she was just legitimately TERRIFIED.

If you have not seen her acceptance speech yet, here it is!

Too Indian to be Miss America? I don't think so.

By: Jessica Cooper

On Sunday night, Miss New York, Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America. She is the first woman of Indian decent to take home the title of Miss America.  Many people are very upset that an Indian- American woman won the pageant. People tweeted horrible things such as "How the fuck does a foreigner win miss America? She is a Arab! " and my personal favorite "I swear I'm not racist but this is America."

Yes, this is America.  And that is precisely why she won.

America. The land of opportunity. The Melting Pot. The Salad Bowl. In fact, you are probably here because your parents, grandparents, or great grandparents, you name it travelled here by boat with only a few dollars in their pockets. I find it hilarious that people would even say "this is America". Because America is a combination of every ethnicity and culture. Nina Davuluri represents the essence of what this country is about. In fact, how many times have you asked a person about their ethnic backgrounds and suddenly it becomes a contest. "Well, you know, I'm like 30% Irish, 20% German, 40% Italian, and %10 English. I'm a little mut I know. Tehehehe." And you gotta love the people who wear shirts like "100% Italian". Nothing against any of these people who say these things or wear these shirts. We all do it! My point is that for a country that loves to boast so much about our ethnicities, why would anybody hate on a winner of a pageant for being Indian? It simply boggles my mind.

In my opinion, Nina Davuluri certainly deserved the crown. And at the very least, to be treated as a normal competitor in the competition. It makes me wonder when she was walking the runway as Miss New York, were people still thinking of her as "The Indian girl" or the "Arab?" Would they have thought these same things if she wouldn't have won? Nina was particularly noticed by people when she did a Bollywood style dance for her talent. Apparently some people thought " Oh that's not American, so we don't like her." I would love for somebody to get up and do the most American dance they can possibly think of in front of thousands of people. Because 1. They are not going to win, and 2. They would probably end up looking like Napoleon Dynamite. So best of luck to all of Nina's haters because with a close minded attitude like that, the furthest you're going is digging yourself into a deeper hole, and maybe on Youtube for crappiest dancer ever.

Although she took home the crown in the USA, the situation is strangely ironic.  It has been said that she could have never won a pageant in South Asia because she is "too dark-skinned".  In India, skin color is a "national OBSESSION", and according to Indian and Indian- American writers,  you would not see a woman of her complexion even in a pageant. She would be too dark to be even considered beautiful.

The photograph above is an advertisement for an Indian Skin Whitening cream.

A part of the whitening epidemic in India that truly fascinates me is that while they are over there trying to become lighter, people over here are trying to become DARKER. WHY IS EVERYTHING BACKWARDS? Here, we have people going in tanning beds, getting spray tans, rub on tans, any kind of tan you can think of, somebody is getting it. AND IT'S KILLING US AND GIVING US CANCER. How about we just like ourselves for who we are and what we look like already? Oh, wait, we can't do that. Because that would be LOGICAL. Not to mention, our skin looks the way it does for a reason people! Indians, yes, you need the pigment in your skin to protect you from the sun. White people, we are so white because we don't really have that problem as much! Therefore, we are pasty! IT'S SCIENCE.

This looks very bad.

In conclusion, the 2014 Miss America is a very beautiful, bright, and talented young woman. Nobody has any room to judge her; especially in this country because she is a great example of what America looks like today. And I don't know about you, but I think her dark skin is absolutely beautiful. A crown well deserved. GO INDIA!
